The 5 Star System

I hate this system, especially when I’m looking on sites for reviews and stuff.

Since the system has 5 increments, one increment is equal to 20%, and a half increment, even though its ONLY HALF, is 10%. So the difference between 3 stars and 4 stars is 20%, from a 60% to 80% aka epic fail to decent.

But the difference between 3 and 4 stars is a count of one increment, which to most people is not a lot since most people just see it as “one less”, but I don’t think a lot of people realize the influence 1 star has compared to to most things.

1 to 100 is nothing, 1 to 12 is somewhat considerable, but 1 to 5 is pretty much make or break

Granted, when I see a 4 to 5 star rating, I know whatever I’m looking at is probably pretty good and the opposite for 0 to 2, but its when I see 3 to 3.5 when I start to get suspicious. It’s like “Some people think this is really good, others don’t, so what is it?”

Solution? Make everything a scale of 10, which still makes considerable difference in terms of scale, but is probably more reflective of the buyer/reviewer mindset.
